X Edward FAIRBROTHERDear Judy,Thank you for your enquiry concerning Edward, butsadly I am unable to assist you and to explain thereasons why.In essence the Cheshire Constabulary was formed in1857, and only a few records of officers existbefore this date, Edward does not show as everbeing a member of Cheshire Constabulary.I am presuming here that he was a member of theChester City Police, which was a totallyindependent force, it being formed in 1836, thisforce was to remain independent until 1947, andonly then became part of the CheshireConstabulary.Only one set of records which records the officersentry date into Chester City Police has ever beenfound (CJP20/7/1 retained by the Chester PublicRecord Office the Museum has extracted allinformation from this document) this starts in1836 and runs up to 1939, Edwards name does notappear, which is strange to say the least, that isto say if he was Chester City. The only otherexplanation to perhaps ponder is that he may nothave been a member of Chester City Police, butperhaps a Railway Police Officer, and sadly theCensus returns do not differentiate. I amtherefore at a loss to suggest anything that mayassist you further. Now sadly I have to point out to you that havinglooked at Ancestry UK, I note that you haveextracted and downloaded for public access "To theBest of Our Skill and Knowledge", this is a copywrite publication belonging to the Chief Constableof the Cheshire Constabulary and it clearly statesthis, and without going into the legalities of itall, copy write is transferred from ChiefConstable to Chief Constable. Whilst we have noobjection to you as an individual having a copyand would have made it available to you, we askthat you remove it without delay from the Ancestrysite, and we look forward to you letting us knowthat you have done so.Yours sincerelyJim TalbotTrustee and ResearcherMuseum of Policing in Cheshire.
