X James ETCHELLS.Dear DebraThank you for your nicely worded request forinformation concerning James you would besurprised how many enquires we get from people whonever say please or thank you, but first I have topoint out a few things. The Cheshire Constabulary was formed in April1857; there are many thousands of records, theseare held by the Cheshire Record Office, Chester. Ias a retired Police officer and voluntary PoliceMuseum Researcher am slowly extracting theserecords. Cheshire Police Officer Enrolment Recordsare held under Reference CJP7 Volumes 1-5. Thesefive volumes are very large and in poor condition, run from 1857- 22 March 1913. However this iswhere it gets a little confusing James Etchellswas the Chief Constable of Macclesfield BoroughPolice, which was a totally independent forcebetween 1836 and 1947 and only then did it becomepart of the Cheshire Constabulary, sadly when thisevent took place none of the Police OfficerRecords came across with them, so we are at a lossfor any great detail as to any officers personaldetails. However, James because he was Chief isdocumented in the Macclesfield History. But justin case you may have missed it I have his startingdate as 1st January 1842 and retiring to pensionon the 9th April 1874. 10th February 1847 promotedInspector and then promoted the Chief Constable onthe 18th October 1860. On his retirement hereceived £100 from the Town Council for his pastand faith full service. Having just looked at thehistory again on the website I note that twophotographs of James are missing, I have scannedthem and have attached them. I wish I had moreinformation to give you. It perhaps would be agood idea if just prior to you visit to the Museumyou contact Peter and ask him if it is possible tophotocopy the history for you.If you have any further questions please don'thesitate to contact me.
