X Thomas and Geoffrey DOOLEYDear Yvonne,Thank you for your nicely worded request forinformation concerning Thomas and Geoffrey youwould be surprised how many enquires we get frompeople who never say please or thank you, butfirst I have to point out a few things. Sadly wedo not have a photograph, that is to say we may, there are literally hundreds of photographs ofofficers, but their names were never recorded onthe reverse of the photograph.Firstly I have to deal with the CheshireConstabulary, as this is where it may have allstarted out with Jeremiah Dooley, but pleaseremember that he may not be connected and it isonly the fact that he served with WarringtonBorough Police that it is a possible line ofenquiry for you to research. Cheshire Constabularywas formed in April 1857; there are many thousandsof records, and include all Cheshire Constabularyand its Constituent Forces, and these are held bythe Cheshire Record Office, Chester. As a retiredPolice officer and volunteer Police MuseumResearcher I am slowly extracting these records.Cheshire Police Officer Enrolment Records are heldunder Reference CJP7 Volumes 1-5. These fivevolumes are very large and in poor condition, runfrom 1857- 22 March 1913; the information whichyou seek for Jeremiah's Cheshire Police Service isrecorded in Volume 2. Warrington Borough Policewas formed circa 1833, the Enrolment of Officersrecords 1846-1897, are held under CJP/20/2/1.I say all this because I want to try and reassureyou that what I give you is as it appears in therespective volumes. However if you so wish, youcan of course have the records confirmed by theChester Records Office Archivist. But it would beremiss of me if I did not point out that TheRecord Office will charge you a minimum of £27 persearch per volume; therefore your total bill wouldbe in excess of £100, so please be aware. TheMuseum charges, for searching the three volumesare on a reducing scale i.e. dependant on theinformation recorded, the maximum amount payableis £10, which represents good value. Yourremittance is £10 and as we are working on a trustbasis please forward payment by cheque madepayable to the 'Museum of Policing in Cheshire'and forward it to The Curator, Mr. Peter Wroe,Museum of Policing in Cheshire, Warrington PoliceStation, Arpley Street, Warrington, Cheshire. WA1.1LQ. The Museum is situated within the main policeat Warrington, which is very handy for you tovisit and does contain a great deal of informationand artefacts from Warrington Borough Police, however it is currently closed for building workto enable us to allow more visits by the public,so if you wish to visit in the not too distantfuture please contact again, say a month's timeand we can you a better idea when the Museum willre-open.If you also read the history of the CheshireConstabulary "To the Best of Our Skill andKnowledge" which is on the Museum Web Site, I feelcertain that a useful picture can be obtained oflife in the force at the time, there was verylittle difference between a County and Boroughpolice officer, except that the Borough policeofficer was only responsible for the area in whichhe policed. In my own opinion discipline in allforces was draconian and those who strayed outsidethe rules were fined way above what they earned ordismissed. Also the restrictions on their privatelife, an officer was not allowed to drink on oroff duty even in his own home.I trust you will enjoy what follows and can I askyou when you get a moment would you send a quickmail so I can mark of your enquiry as completed. If you have any further questions please don'thesitate to contact me.
