X William DAVIESDear Angela,Thank you for your nicely worded request forinformation concerning William, you would besurprised how many enquires we get from people whonever say please or thank you, but first I have topoint out a few things. Sadly we do not have aphotograph, but if you do we would appreciate ascanned copy for our records. The Cheshire Constabulary was formed in April1857; and covered the entire County for Policingpurposes. There are many thousands of records;these are held by the Cheshire Record Office,Chester. I as a retired Police officer andvoluntary Police Museum Researcher am slowlyextracting these records. Cheshire Police OfficerEnrolment Records are held under Reference CJP7Volumes 1-5. These five volumes are very large andin poor condition, run from 1857- 22 March 1913.During this period of time a number of otherPolice Force were running alongside or were beingformed, these were known as Borough Police Forces.Wallasey Borough Police Force was formed in 1913and remained an independent Police Force until1967; it was then amalgamated into the CheshireConstabulary. It remained as part of Cheshireuntil 1974; it was then removed under the LocalGovernment Re-organization and became part ofMerseyside and Policed by Merseyside Police.Unfortunately very few Police records came toCheshire on amalgamation and I have no idea whereall the records went, if they are anything likeBirkenhead Borough, whose records were dumped inthe Mersey because of some disgruntled SeniorOfficer who did not like the idea of amalgamatingwith Cheshire, then we may never have a chance offinding who was a member of Wallasey. I haveattached what is held on Wallasey by the CountyRecords Office at Chester. I have actually enteredthe details of the officers that were sworn intoWallasey from "Swearing of Oath" Book (CJP13/3)and PC William Davies did join the WallaseyBorough Police of on the 20 November 1918, andthis is all it does say. To be brutally honestthis is probably all that you will be able toobtain. You may try Merseyside Police and theperson responsible for their records is Ms. KateMcNichol, Force Records Manager, InformationManagement and Disclosure Department MerseysidePolice, Police HQ, Canning Street, Merseyside. The only other things that may give you an insightto Wallasey Borough Police are two books Helmets,Handcuffs and Hoses. The Story of The WallaseyPolice and Fire Brigade, Part One deals with thePolice and Part 2 deals with the Wallasey FireBrigade. For some reason most of the Policeofficers names are in Part 2. However, these booksare a mind of information and well worthpurchasing, I am unsure now, but I think Ipurchased the direct from the author Noel E Smithfor about £15 for both. Their ISBN numbers are(Part one) 0-9517762-3-1 and 0-9517762-4-X,interestingly on page 74, Appendix ll the name W.Davies appears as a fireman, which would not beunusual as many Police Officers doubled asFiremen. I also feel sure that Noel Smith has abetter knowledge as to where some of the recordsmay be held than I. His home address is "Sandheys"164 Rake Lane, Wallasey. CH45. 1JP.I am so sorry I cannot give you any furtherinformation on William, I only wish I could. Can Iask you when you get a moment would you send aquick mail so I can mark of your enquiry ascompleted? If you have any further questionsplease don't hesitate to contact me.
