X Robert CollingsDear Andrew,To answer your questions in no particular order, Ihave attached the only photograph of CongletonBorough Police, and we only know this because ofthe helmet badge, I cannot even give you a date ofwhen this was taken, but this style of hat (Shako)would have certainly been in use when Robertjoined circa 1908, it did not alter to the helmetstyle until circa 1938. This is also the samestyle hat that would have been worn in WallaseyBorough. If you 'Google' British Police Helmet'sit will give you some idea through the timesRobert served? If Robert had completed anywhere between 25 and 30years service, which I feel certain he did, hewould have been entitled to a pension. The averagepay of a PC in 1908 was about 25/- per week, for aSergeant in 1922 it was £5 per week. 1927 is was£5. 12. 6d per week. Circa 1935 perhaps whenRobert may have retired on pension his annual paywould have been around £293. 10s. His pension onretirement would have been around £195 per annum,so indeed it was the norm, for most retiredofficers to seek other employment.Robert would not have received any type of serviceaward (medal) the Police Long Service and GoodConduct medal was Instituted on the 14th June 1951and was awarded after 22 years, however they musthave been serving in 1951, to have received themedal, sadly as Robert had retired by then hewould not have received it.Regards Jim
