X Alfred Charles CLEAVER 1896 Ireland ~1984Cheshire.Chester City Police 1922~1949.Cheshire Constabulary 1949~1953.Prior to entering the Police Service AlfredCharles CLEAVER served as a Territorial Soldierwith the 1/5th battalion South LancashireRegiment. During World War 1, on the 13 February1915 his unit landed in France. It was initiallyattached to 12th Brigade of the regular 4thDivision. It had a short attachment betweenNovember 1915 and January 1916 with the 36thUlster Division and then finally joined the 166thBrigade of the 55th West Lancashire Division. Itsaw action on the Somme in 1916, Ypres and Cambraiin 1917. In the great German offensive of 1918 itfought a notable defensive action at Givenchybefore taking part in the final successful AlliedOffensive in Artois. During his War service he waspromoted to the rank of Sergeant. He joinedChester City Police on the 21st December 1922 andserved as Constable 38 at Chester. In 1932 he wasawarded the Kings Police Medal for Gallantry andThe Bronze Medal of the Society for the Protectionof Life from Fire. His citation reading 'In theearly hours of Saturday 2nd December 1932Constable Cleaver arrived at the scene of a fireat 15 Trinity Street, Chester. He found the frontdoor and living room ablaze and flames sweepingacross the passage. He rushed through the flamesand up the stairs. He removed two children tosafety and returned to bring out another child andthe mother. He returned a third time and broughtout a fourth child. In an example of outstandingcourage, he sustained burns which requiredtreatment at the Infirmary'. He remained with theChester City Police until transferred to CheshireConstabulary under the Police Amalgamations in1949. He retired from the Cheshire Constabulary onthe 4th August 1953 having attained the rank ofInspector.His Awards from left to right and in order ofprecedence (1) Kings Police Medal (Gallantry).
