X Samuel CLARKEDear Carol,I started to flick through the pages of the Volumetoday looking for something completely differentand low and behold there was Constable 68,although none of the names you sent match, butperhaps the information will at some stage in yourresearch link in. Before I go further perhaps Icould point out a few things. The CheshireConstabulary was formed in April 1857; there aremany thousands of records, these are held by theCheshire Record Office, Chester. I as a retiredPolice officer and voluntary Police MuseumResearcher am slowly extracting these records.Cheshire Police Officer Enrolment Records are heldunder Reference CJP7 Volumes 1-5. These fivevolumes are very large and in poor condition, runfrom 1857- 22 March 1913. As I pointed out earlierover the next 100 years or so many of what wasknown as Borough Police Forces were amalgamatedinto Cheshire, Stockport being no exception, itbeing formed in 1870 and remaining as a BoroughForce until 1967.If you also read the history of the CheshireConstabulary "To the Best of Our Skill andKnowledge" which is on the Museum Web Site, I feelcertain that a useful picture can be obtained oflife in the force at the time, one force beingvery much like the other but the Borough Forcesonly being responsible for the Borough and theCheshire Constabulary being responsible for theentire County. In the earlier times you would havean overlap with both Borough and County officersin the same area. My own opinion is thatdiscipline was severe and those who strayedoutside the rules were fined way above what theyearned or dismissed. Also the restrictions ontheir private life, an officer was not allowed todrink on or off duty even in his own home.I trust you will enjoy what follows and can I askyou when you get a moment would you send a quickmail so I can mark of your enquiry as completed. If you have any further questions please don'thesitate to contact me.
