X The following was taken from the book The Historyof Cheshire Constabulary 'To the Best of Our Skilland Knowledge' also from which I have attached aphotograph of Pulteney Malcolm. I have seen a farbetter photograph at the Museum which shows him inhis uniform bearing all his medals.Lt Col Pulteney Malcolm (CBE. DSO. MVO. AlbertMedal (Gallantry) KPM) was Chief Constable ofCheshire Constabulary between September 1910 and30 April 1934. He was prior to this CC of HullConstabulary for 6 years. He was born in India in1862 and died in Kent, England in 1940. He servedin the Indian Army from which he retired in 1904.He was the son of a General. Apart from hisservice in the Police which is fairly welldocumented in the book, nothing of a personalnature is known.Taking the information on his birth year and placeand bearing in mind I have his birth year as 1862,and the fact that there are not many Malcolm'swith the forename of Pulteney. I searched the UKNational Census, however the only match was withinthe 1891 Census, I assumed that he was not on the1901 and 1881 Census as he may well have beenserving abroad with his Unit. He is recorded asPulteney Malcolm 29 years (1862) Born Hindustan,India, Adjutant Bengal Staff Corps. His wife isrecorded as Emily M. Malcolm 24 years (1867) bornSouthport Lancashire. They were residing at 22Kent Street, Birkdale, Lancaster.I then checked the marriage returns on Ancestry UKfor their marriage which shows that PulteneyMalcolm married an Emily Maria Bower in theDecember Quarter of 1888 in Ormskirk, Lancashire.(Ormskirk being virtually within walking distanceof Southport Emily's birthplace)I then searched the Indian Army Lists and notedPulteney Malcolm, Rank Major, DOB 16/8/1861, FirstCommissioned 11/8/1880, Retired 11/8/1904.I then checked the Family Trees on Ancestry forPulteney Malcolm with year of birth of 1861 andcame up with your tree. You can perhaps understandthat between a mixture of my information i.e.,Bengal Staff Corps, year of birth, his wife on theCensus being Emily M. and he marrying an EmilyMaria Bower, his year of death being in 1940 andinformation from the History Book. Your tree alsoshowing that a Pulteney Malcolm married EmilyBower, he died in 1940, if all this is notconnected to your tree they are remarkablecoincidences and you can perhaps forgive me if Ihave it wrong.
