X George Frederick Bertram BROWNDear Mark,Thank you for your request for informationconcerning George, unfortunately George did notserve for any great period of time with theCheshire Constabulary so I am sure you willappreciate there is very little informationrecorded, further sadly we do not have aphotograph, that is to say we may, there areliterally hundreds of photographs of officers, buttheir names were never recorded on the reverse ofthe photograph so from the Museum point of view heremains unidentifiable. The Cheshire Constabulary was formed in April1857; there are many thousands of records, theseare held by the Cheshire Record Office, Chester. As a retired Police officer and voluntary PoliceMuseum Researcher I am slowly extracting theserecords. Cheshire Police Officer Enrolment Recordsare held under Reference CJP7 Volumes 1-5. Thesefive volumes are very large and in poor condition, run from 1857- 22 March 1913; the informationwhich you seek would therefore be recorded inVolume 5.I say all this because I want to reassure you thatwhat I give you is as it appears in the respectivevolumes. However if you so wish, you can of coursehave the records confirmed by the Chester RecordsOffice Archivist. But it would be remiss of me ifI did not point out that The Record Office willcharge you a minimum of £27 per search per volume. And in your case this would run well in excess of£100 because we do hold other Borough Police Forcerecords, which I will speak about a little later. If you also read the history of the CheshireConstabulary "To the Best of Our Skill andKnowledge" which is on the Museum Web Site underthe drop down menu marked 'History' I feel certainthat a useful picture can be obtained of life inthe force at the time, my own opinion is thatdiscipline was draconian and those who strayedoutside the rule's were fined way above what theyearned or dismissed. Also the restrictions ontheir private life, an officer was not allowed todrink on or off duty even in his own home. It allcomes down to the fact that up until the 1960'severy Chief Constable of Cheshire was an exmilitary officer and they of course brought withthem the military codes of practice. You state that it is family lore that he may haverejoined the police after his service during WorldWar 1. Without doubt he did not rejoin theCheshire Constabulary. We also hold the recordsfor the following police forces that were withinthe boundaries of Cheshire, Chester (1836-1949),Wallasey (1913-1967), Macclesfield (1836-1947),Stalybridge (1857-1947), Stockport (1870-1967),these have been searched and show no trace ofGeorge. The following forces were also withinCheshire, Hyde and Congleton, whilst we do have afew officers from them, the records are by nomeans complete and sadly none of their records areheld with any other Museum/Archives, where theyare is just anyone's guess, naturally I am unableto say then if he served with one of these forces. We also hold the records for Warrington BoroughPolice, this force was originally with theboundaries of Lancashire however, when it becamepart of Cheshire 1974, it records came with themand these date from 1833.It is quite possible with him being born in Hydethat he may have rejoined this force, but as Isaid there are no police officer records for thisforce. If an officer served in the police prior toWW1 and then went to service, he would normallyhave returned to his former force to allow hispension and seniority to continue from where itwas before he went in to service. Can I ask you when you get a moment would you senda quick mail so I can mark of your enquiry ascomplete?
