X PatronGerald Cavendish GrosvenorDuke of Westminster, KG, CB, OBE, TD, DLOur ref: JT48/2012John HUGHESDear Janie,Thank you for your nicely worded request forinformation concerning John sadly I am not goingto be able to assist you in any great detail andto explain the reasons why.The Cheshire Constabulary was formed in April1857; there are many thousands of records, theseare held by the Cheshire Record Office, Chester. As a retired Police officer and voluntary PoliceMuseum Researcher I am slowly extracting theserecords. Cheshire Constabulary was responsible forthe area of Wallasey from 1857 until 1913,Wallasey then formed its own police force i.e.Wallasey Borough Police it remained independentuntil 1967 when it again part of the CheshireConstabulary, however it only remained withCheshire until 1974 and then became part ofMerseyside under the local Government Boundarychanges. Sadly when it became part of Cheshireagain in 1967 none of its police personal recordscame with it and therefore I am unable to give youany information concerning your granddad otherthan that his number was 92,The only thing that I can suggest to you is thatyou seek out the following two paperbacks? Thefirst is 'Helmets, Handcuffs and Horses, The Storyof the Wallasey Police and Fire Brigade' Part OneWallasey Police ISBN 0-9517762-3-1, and 'Helmets,Handcuffs and Hoses, The Story of the WallaseyPolice and Fire Brigade' Part Two The WallaseyFire Brigade, ISBN 0-9517762-4-X, whilst this doescontain mostly information about the Fire Brigadeat the rear of the book is a list of officers thatserved with Wallasey Borough Police and Johns nameis in this part. Both are by the author Noel E.Smith and printed circa 2001. Part One gives areal insight to Wallasey Police and has numerousphotographs it also mentions the fact that Johnlived in Walmsley Street, in 1927 he aslo playedfootball for the force but this is all that itdoes say.I am also aware that Wirral Archives, CanningStreet, Birkenhead hold the Wallasey Borough WatchCommittee Minutes 1912-1959, these books normallycontain a great deal of information and sometimesinformation about particular officers.I am truly sorry I do not have more informationfor you but if you have any further questionsplease don't hesitate to contact me.Best wishes.Jim Talbot Trustee and Researcher, Cheshire Museumof Policing.Museum of Policing in Cheshire,Warrington Police Station, Arpley Street,Warrington.
