X PatronGerald Cavendish GrosvenorDuke of Westminster, KG, CB, OBE, TD, DLYour ref: JT53/2012William CHADWICK. Born 24th July 1822, Haigh,Mottram.Dear Susanne,Thank you for your enquiry, whilst we do have alittle information on Chief Constable Chadwick itis not in any great detail and to explain thereasons why. In essence the Cheshire Constabularywas formed in 1857, prior to this Cheshire waspoliced by Parish Constables and as far as we canwork out William falls within this catergory. Heinitially joined the Metroploitan Police circa1851 after two years service he returned toCheshire and joined the Cheshire Constabularycirca 1853 stationed at Dukinfield, we have noservice record for him as personal records forofficers did not commence until 1857. At somepoint he left Cheshire presumably prior to 1857and became an Inspector with the Ashton Under LyneBorough Police Force, I have checked withLancashire Records Office who hold this forcesrecords but his name does not appear, and in 1862became Chief Constable of Stalybridge BoroughPolice Force where he remained until hisretirement in 1899. As far as I am awareStalybridge Borough Police Force personal recordsare none existant but you may try Tameside ArchiveService.William's career is well documented throughvarious sources in particular the BritishNewspaper Archives but it is very expensive tojoin this service, so a little later I can tellyou where some cuttings are held. You will also bepleased to know that William published a book"Reminiscences of a Chief Constable" circa 1901.It was re published in 1974 by Longdendale AmenitySociety in 1974 and now of course well out ofprint. However I have seen this book advertised onthe net from £50 down to £15 last noticing it forsale viahttp://www.abebooks.co.uk/REMINISCENCES-CHIEF-CONSTABLE-CHADWICK-William-Longendale/319788776/bd Iurge you to try and get hold of this book as itwill give you a fascinating insight to William andhis service in the police force. The book alsocontains his photograph, we have a scanned copy ofthis photograph together with a further photographof him standing with his officers at Staylybridgetaken circa 1899. Unfortunately I cannot give youscanned copies of the photographs without askingfor a small donation of £8 to the Museum funds inessence as the Museum has had to pay for theseitems, also included will be a newspaper cuttingfor hisobituary which in itself is very interesting.Further I have pages 128-133 of an articlewritten in 1957 by a former Staylbridge Inspector. He wrote this short history of Stalybridge BoroughPolice as part of the Staylbridge CorporationSovenir Magazine Issue 1857-1957.If you require these items payment can be made bygoing to the Museum websitewww.museumofpolicingincheshire.org.uk within thedrop down 'Index' is the section marked 'FamilyResearch' there it will be seen 'Pay-Pal orDebit/Credit Card' click on this and follow theinstructions, when payment is received by theMuseum Pay-Pal will automatically let the Museumknow. If you prefer to pay by cheque please makeit payable to the 'Museum of Policing in Cheshire'and send it to the Curator, Mr. Peter Wroe, Museumof Policing, County Police Office, Arpley Street,Warrington, Cheshire CW1 1LQ, if you pay in thismanner will you kindly let me know.Where the reference BSI appears in the Museumdatabase this applies to a website known as theBlack Sheep Index www.blacksheepindex.co.uk thisis a site that carries articles concerning PoliceOfficers. On occasions the officer's full name isnot given, but we have tried to make a matchagainst what the Museum Records show. Between 1891and 1902 it shows numerous cuttings that areavailable. There are charges involved to obtainthese cuttings direct from the owner of thewebsite. It is emphasized that the Museum does notknow the contents of these cuttings and takes noresponsibility for them. The Museum is onlyshowing this as an aid that there is furtherinformation from another source. Should you decideyou would like this article when requesting itplease make reference to this Museum, whilst youwon't get it any cheaper it may just speed up theprocess? I would also ask for a reduced price ifyou are buying several.Lastly in March 2009 a lady named RebeccaHazelhurst contacted the Museum requestinginformation on William Chadwick, I do not recallin which way she was connected to him but assumingthat she still has the same email she can bereference to the fact that you have obtained herdetails from this museum.Sincere best wishesJim Talbot, Trustee and ResearcherMuseum of Policing in Cheshire.Museum of Policing in Cheshire,Warrington Police Station, Arpley Street,Warrington.
