X Edward BRISCALLDear Gillian,Sadly I cannot give you any further informationconcerning Edward, believe me I would truly liketo be able to assist further. I have attached thereport that I sent to Janet, and the attachmentconcerning Macclesfield Borough Police. There isone difference between William's and EdwardsCensus returns of 1851 in that William's entrystates 'Police Constable' and Edward's states'County Police Officer' this suggests that he mayhave been a member of the Old Cheshire CountyPolice Force (prior to 1857) for which records arenone existent. In the most simplistic of waysCheshire County Old Police Force Officers wererecruited locally and remained in their area andtherefore any records, if at all, would have beenkept locally. Post 1857 after the New CheshireConstabulary was formed officers were moved aroundthe County, but records were kept centrally at thePolice HQ in Chester i.e. CJP7 Volumes 1-5.You will note in Janet's report that I have madereference to a list CJP9/9. I should perhapsclarify this, a little better. The list containsofficers dating back to 1840, i.e. the list wascompiled on the 3rd of April 1857 and was OldCheshire County Police Officer's not to beretained in the New Cheshire Constabulary. It didnot list officers that had already served andleft, so in effect Edward could well have servedin the Old County Force but had left for Londonpost the 1851 Census and prior to the list beingcompiled in April 1857; I hope this has cleared upany ambiguity. The whole issue surrounding Police Officer recordsis so complex, not just in Cheshire but the entireCountry and it was all brought about becausevarious County Boroughs and their Cities had thetheir own Police Forces some starting in the1830's and then put simply the Government broughtin County Police Forces. So in effect you couldhave like Cheshire 6 separate Police Forces ormore depending on the size of the county, plus theCounty Force itself, it is mind blowing at timestrying to sort out in just what Police Force hedid serve. If you think I can help any further please do nothesitate to contact me? And once again I am trulysorry I have not been able to trace Edward. Andlastly I will add Edward's details to the databaseand if you should obtain anything further in thefuture would you be so kind and let me know, I canthen update the entry. I would also appreciatethat you send me a quick mail so I know you havereceived the information and I can mark off yourenquiry as having been completed.Sincere best wishes.
