X My Grandfather was SAMUEL YOUNG born 6 January1899 in Shepherds Bush, London. To my knowledge,on his discharge from the Army he joined theChester City Police. I have enclosed copies of hisArmy discharge papers. He lived at 11 Beeston View, Handbridge, Chester, where my mother's sister still lives.Unfortunately I have no other information exceptsome photographs, 2 of which I enclose as anattachment. I also have a large 'panorama'photograph of what appears to be the completeforce, it is dated 1932. Apologies for the qualityof my attempt to photograph it.I look forward with interest to your reply. ChrisElliott.Dear Chris, firstly thank you very much for thephotograph of Samuel, this together with the otherinformation will be stored at the Museum for anyfuture reference. As I said initially very little information isheld, to explain why. Samuel initially joinedChester City Police, this force was formed in 1833and remained a totally independent force until1949, it was then amalgamated with the CheshireConstabulary, sadly at that point in time only onevolume of records which contained the officersjoining date came into the possession of Cheshire.Where the rest went is anyone's guess. To makematters worse the Cheshire Constabulary recordsare more or less complete between 1847 and 1913,post 1913 successive civilian administrationswithin Cheshire Constabulary, have, when anofficer retires depleted their personal file, retaining only the minimum amount of informationto administer his pension. Therefore the onlyinformation we hold is as follows, PC 503 SamuelYoung joined Chester City Police on the 21stDecember 1922 he remained at Chester City untilthe 1st April 1949, when the amalgamations tookplace, at this point he had attained the rank ofSergeant. He on transfer to Cheshire becameSergeant 833 Samuel Young, he retired to pensionon the 28th February 1953, it appears that at notime during his Cheshire service did he serveanywhere else within the County. His age onretirement is given as 54 years 1 month and hecompleted a total service of 30 years 70 days. Hisannual pay on retirement was £537. 9s. 4d and hisannual pension was £358. 6s. 2d. He was awardedthe police Long Service and Good Conduct Medal in1951. And sadly this is all the information wehave. If you look at the Histories of the variousforces on the web site there is within the historyof the Cheshire Constabulary information onChester City Police. I am truly sorry I have notbeen able to assist you in any great detail.Sincere best wishes and again thank you for theinformation. Jim Talbot, Trustee and ResearcherMuseum of Policing in Cheshire.
