X Walter WEAVERDear SteveThank you for your request for informationconcerning Walter, sadly officers records fromthis period are not very detailed because when anofficer retired to pension, his personal file wassifted by civilian staff within the CheshirePolice and only the minimal amount of informationretained. In your Grandfathers case it is all sovery unfortunate that his original force wasMacclesfield Borough Police and when the force wasamalgamated into Cheshire in 1947 none of theofficers records came with them. This Museum hastried to find these records but we presume theywere destroyed by the Borough Authorities.Macclesfield Borough Police was formed in 1836 andremained as an independent police force until 1947when it became part of the Cheshire Constabularyand rather than me explain it all here if you goto the drop down menu marked history on our website you will see a small book that give gives theHistory of Macclesfield Borough Police. One thingit does not show you in this book is at the rearthere is a group photograph of all the officersserving on the last day before amalgamation, yourGrandfather is on the rear row. I do not knowwhere you reside but I do know if you contactMacclesfield Library they hold a copy of the bookand will photocopy it for you at a cost of course. If you have any problems with this come back tome.If you also read the history of the CheshireConstabulary "To the Best of Our Skill andKnowledge" which is on the Museum Web Site, I feelcertain that a useful picture can be obtained oflife in the force at the time, my own opinion isthat discipline was draconian and those whostrayed outside the rule's were fined way abovewhat they earned or dismissed. Also therestrictions on their private life, an officer wasnot allowed to drink on or off duty even in hisown home. It all comes down to the fact that upuntil the 1960's every Chief Constable of Cheshirewas an ex military officer and they of coursebrought with them the military codes of practice. Can I ask you when you get a moment would you senda quick mail so I can mark of your enquiry ascomplete?
