X Jack THOMPSONDear Sylvia (if I may be so bold),Thank you for your nicely worded request forinformation concerning Jack you would be surprisedhow many enquires we get from people who never sayplease or thank you, but first I have to point outa few things. Sadly we do not have a photograph. The Cheshire Constabulary was formed in April1857; there are many thousands of records, theseare held by the Cheshire Record Office (CRO),Chester. I as a retired Police officer andvoluntary Police Museum Researcher am slowlyextracting these records. Cheshire Police OfficerEnrolment Records are held under Reference CJP7Volumes 1-5. These five volumes are very large andin poor condition, run from 1857- 22 March 1913;sadly post this date there are very few recordswith any type of full information as to where theofficer served etc. Having said this I haverecently been informed that several boxes ofofficer's records in the form of Micro Fiche havebeen found at our own storage facilities asopposed to the CRO. I have not seen them myselfbut will be looking into the matter as soon aspossible and should any further information cometo light on Jack be assured it will be sent toyou. The information regarding his marriage isretained in CJP24/2, 1847-1966. And with regard tohis pension CJP20/2/1, 1857-1965.I say all this because I want to try and reassureyou that what I give you is as it appears in therespective volumes. However if you so wish, youcan of course have the records confirmed by theChester Records Office Archivist. But it would beremiss of me if I did not point out that whilstthis Museum works on a donation basis, (madepayable to the Museum of Policing in Cheshire). The Record Office however, will charge you aminimum of £27 per search per volume; thereforeyour total bill would be £54, so please be aware. You appear not to have access to the internet, however if it is possible on there you can readthe history of the Cheshire Constabulary "To theBest of Our Skill and Knowledge" which is on theMuseum Web Site, (site address at the top of thispage) sadly this book is no longer in print and ofcourse now very scarce, it being printed in 1964,but I feel certain that a useful picture can beobtained of life in the force at the time, my ownopinion is that discipline was severe and thosewho strayed outside the rules were fined way abovewhat they earned or dismissed. Also therestrictions on their private life, an officer wasnot allowed to drink on or off duty even in hisown home. It all comes down to the fact that upuntil the 1960's every Chief Constable of Cheshirewas an ex military officer and they of coursebrought with them the military codes of practice.I trust you will enjoy what follows and can I askyou when you get a moment would you send a quickmail so I can mark of your enquiry as completed. If you have any further questions please don'thesitate to contact me.
