X Charles NUTTDear PatriciaThank you for your nicely worded request forinformation concerning Charles you would besurprised how many enquires we get from people whonever say please or thank you, sadly we have norecord of Charles and to explain why.The Cheshire Constabulary was formed in April1857; prior to this the County was policed byvarious Parish Constables. Also at this time andin some cases even earlier several of the Boroughswithin the County had their own Police Force,Macclesfield was one of these it's police forcewas formed in 1836, it remained as a totallyindependent force until 1947 and only then becamepart of the Cheshire Constabulary. I am assumingthat Charles was Macclesfield Borough and thepersonal records appertaining to its officers havenever been found and we assume that as withvirtually every other Borough force that came intoCheshire they were destroyed, I can assure you wehave tried every avenue to see if we could findany of these records. If you read the history of the CheshireConstabulary "To the Best of Our Skill andKnowledge" which is on the Museum Web Site, I feelcertain that a useful picture can be obtained oflife in the force at the time, there is verylittle difference between a County and BoroughPolice force. My own opinion is no matter whichforce you were a member of discipline wasdraconian and those who strayed outside the ruleswere fined way above what they earned ordismissed. Also the restrictions on their privatelife, an officer was not allowed to drink on oroff duty even in his own home. Also on the website is the History of Macclesfield Borough Policehowever what is not contained within that editionis a picture of a Constable in the 1830 neither isa group photograph of what an officer would havelooked like in 1875 and indeed how Charles wouldhave dressed, this is attached separately.I am truly sorry that I have not been able tosupply a record of Charles however, I hope bysending the history it has helped a little. Can Iask you when you get a moment would you send aquick mail so I can mark of your enquiry ascomplete? If you have any further questions pleasedon't hesitate to contact me. Jim Talbot.
