X George Henry MOTTERSHEADDear Stephen,Thank you for your nicely worded request forinformation concerning George, you would besurprised how many enquires we get from people whonever say please or thank you. Whilst the Museumis aware that George did serve as Police Officerthrough the Census Returns of 1891, 1901 and 1911sadly there are no individual police recordsappertaining to him and to explain the reasonswhy. The Cheshire Constabulary was formed in April1857; there are many thousands of records, theseare held by the Cheshire Record Office, Chester. As a retired Police officer and voluntary PoliceMuseum Researcher I am slowly extracting theserecords. At the same time as the County force wasin being there were a number of other policeforces within the County these were known asBorough Police Forces. The area of Macclesfieldhaving such a force, it being formed in 1836 andremained as a Borough force until 1947, only thendid it become part of the Cheshire Constabulary, sadly none of the officers personal records camewith them when the amalgamation took place. ThisMuseum has searched for many years for theofficers records all to no avail. However all isnot lost and I hope what I give you will go someway to assisting you.Firstly I have attached a copy of the 1911 Censusreturn, the address of 113 Brook Street;Macclesfield is also the same address as the 1901Census. I have not attached the return for the1891 Census as I am assuming from your originalemail that you already have this information.Secondly I have attached a copy of the very scarceHistory of Macclesfield Borough Police this shouldgive you a good insight to the time that Georgeserved.Thirdly a group photograph of Macclesfield BoroughPolice Officers showing Detective ConstableMottershead, taken circa 1903.Lastly where the reference BSI appears within theMuseum Database, this applies to a website knownas the Black Sheep Index www.blacksheepindex.co.ukthis is a site that carries newspaper articlesconcerning Police Officers. On occasions theofficer's full name is not given, but we havetried to make a match against what the MuseumRecords show. In the case of George it shows threeentries, 1896 Assault, 1903 Capture By and 1912Presentation To. There are charges involved toobtain these newspaper cuttings direct from theowner of the website. It is emphasized that theMuseum does not know the contents of thesecuttings and takes no responsibility for them. TheMuseum is only showing this as an aid that thereis further information from another source. If youshould decide that you may like to send for theseitems when doing please mention this Museum, whilst you will not get them any cheaper it mayjust help speed up the process. Can I ask you when you get a moment would you senda quick mail so I can mark of your enquiry ascomplete, this is important as whilst we are notfunded by the Cheshire Constabulary, they arestill our 'masters' so to speak and I have toaccount for the information I send out. If youhave any comments good or bad and you wish to makethem please do so?If you have any further questions please don'thesitate to contact me.Jim TalbotTrustee and Researcher, Cheshire Museum ofPolicing.
