X Dear Hilda, below is what the Museum holds onJoseph for his service with Cheshire Constabularynot Warrington Police, I will deal with that alittle later. For his marriage to Ellen Fryer hewould have had to have sought permission from theChief Constable, failure to do this would havebeen a dismissible offence. After his marriage hewould have had to produce his Marriage Certificateto the Chief Clerk, who then entered the detailsdirect from the certificate into the CheshireMarried Police Officers Register. I think it wouldhave been highly unlikely that Joseph was abigamist. If he was he would be taking an awfulbig chance when it was certainly something thatwould, if caught he would have almost certainlybeen jailed for; in particular that he was also apolice officer. The Marriage Register has alsobeen checked for other Joseph Millington's not onefits the bill (pardon the pun) or do any of themhave a wife with the surname of McKeown. The onlyother possible explanation is that Ellen diedshortly after marriage and Joseph remarried MaryMaggie McKeown, she was born at Neston which asyou know is on the Wirral and hence the reason whythat marriage took place in Birkenhead as a CivilMarriage. (I checked the Cheshire BMD, and notedthat a Joseph did marry a Mary Maggie McKeown. The1891 Census and indeed Joseph is married to Maryliving in Warrington).Returning to Warrington, Warrington Police was anindependent Police Force from the mid 1800's andremained independent until 1974 and only then didit become part of the Cheshire Constabulary. Hewas Sgt 25 Joseph Millington joined WarringtonBorough Police 2nd December 1886 and retired onpension 5th December 1812 I have no furtherinformation other than this concerning his servicewith Warrington. A History of Warrington BoroughPolice is on the Museum Web Site. The Museum does not hold a photograph of Joseph soa copy would be very much appreciated. With regardto what this information costs, we do not chargehowever if you wish to make a small donation youcan send it to the address below.
