X Sgt 202 William MANLEYDear Trish (if I may be so bold)Thank you for your enquiry concerning the aboveofficer. The following information is held in theMuseum Archives, I trust you will enjoy readingit. Could I ask you if you have photograph ofWilliam the Museum would appreciate a scan of it,as we do not have one? Again if you also read thehistory of the Cheshire Constabulary "To the Bestof Our Skill and Knowledge" which is on the MuseumWeb Site, I feel certain that a useful picture canbe obtained of life in the force at the time.As you go through the report you will notice thathe is recorded as having 22 years pensionableservice, yet from 1907 to 1927 his service onlyamounts to 20 years, I cannot answer why this hasbeen entered, perhaps he was in receipt of toomuch pension and the Chief Clerk failed torecognise this, if so good, glad he got away withit. There is no indication in the records to saythat he retired on ill health through deafness. Ionly wish I could find something in the archivesthat would throw some light on the storyconcerning a Sgt shooting himself. It may be inthere somewhere, believe me there are literallymany thousands of documents. Having said this ifWilliam was at the Station at the time, irrespective of his deafness, he would have almostbeen certainly charged with neglect of duty in notreporting on the event afterwards and this wouldhave been recorded in his records and you can seehe has no misconduct reports recorded against him.His pension record is inconclusive in so far as itdoes not give his death details. I presume he diedpost 1965 as this is when the pension registerceases (CJP20/2/1). There are no further pensionrecords available in the archives. The only thingI can suggest if you really need to have his totalamount received on pension over his retirementyears is that you make application to CheshireCounty Council at Chester, but to be perfectlyblunt, you will not get much help from them. From other sources, I can only find the death ofone William MANLEY in 1974 in the Crewe District(South Cheshire Area), is this likely to be him?,if this is him, then I reckon at the age of 91, hedefinitely would have held and probably stilldoes, the longest ever Police Pensioner of 47years, if you ever find out please let me know andon that I wish I beat him. Again on a personalnote you will see that Thomas's first posting in1907 was Over, Winsford, it's bizarre really tothink that some 100 years ago he walked out of thevery same Police Station front doors that I did inSeptember 1975, in fact I live about 1/2 mile fromthe Old Winsford Station and I will send you aphotograph from my own e-mail. When you look atthe photograph he would have walked out the dooron the left, which was the main Police Station, the door on the right was the Court's. Trish whenyou get a moment can you please acknowledgereceipt of this report so I can mark it offaccordingly.Sincere best wishes to you Jim Talbot Trustee andResearcher Museum of Policing in Cheshire.Collar Number/Rank.
