X William Henry JONESDear Debbie,Thank you for your nicely worded request forinformation concerning William you would besurprised how many enquires we get from people whonever say please or thank you, but first I have topoint out a few things. Sadly we do not have aphotograph, but if you do we would appreciate ascanned copy for our records. The Cheshire Constabulary was formed in April1857; there are many thousands of records, theseare held by the Cheshire Record Office, Chester. Ias a retired Police officer and voluntary PoliceMuseum Researcher am slowly extracting theserecords. At the same time as the CheshireConstabulary was in being there were a number ofother Police Forces in the County these were knownas Borough Police Forces, Stockport being one, itbeing formed only in 1870, it was to remain as anindependent Police Force until 1967, and only thendid it become part of the Cheshire Constabulary.Sadly the records from the Borough Forces are fewand far between and where there are officer'spersonal information is very brief. The onlyinformation which the museum holds is as follows:-William Henry Jones, Born 1854 Swansea. Heinitially served for 11 years 25 days with thePolice in Swansea, aged 36 years he resigned hisposition to become Chief Constable of StockportBorough Police, joining on the 1st January 1890and remained as Chief Constable until 03 April1901, when he resigned on a pension of £120. 0s.0d per annum. He died 15th November 1902. I tendto think that because of his very early death, hewas perhaps in ill health and this is the reasonwhy he took his pension. If you also read the history of the CheshireConstabulary "To the Best of Our Skill andKnowledge" which is on the Museum Web Site, I feelcertain that a useful picture can be obtained oflife in the force at the time, and it was more orless the same throughout the Borough PoliceForces. My own opinion is that discipline wassevere and those who strayed outside the ruleswere fined way above what they earned ordismissed, they were more often than not dealtwith by the Chief Constable. Also the restrictionson their private life, an officer was not allowedto drink on or off duty even in his own home.I only wish I had more information to give you,but if I may make a suggestion on you contactStockport Local Heritage Library I feel sure thatthat a person in Williams position should bedocumented somewhere. Can I ask you when you get amoment would you send a quick mail so I can markof your enquiry as completed? If you have anyfurther questions please don't hesitate to contactme. Jim Talbot.
