X Robert HUDSONDear Bernie, (if I may be so bold)Thank you for your enquiry concerning your latefather, but I am saddened to say the Museum holdsvery little detailed information on any officerpost 1913, basically successive civilianadministration within the service were extremelyshort sighted and when an officer retired, resigned etc, his personal file was sifted andonly the minimal of information retained the restwas destroyed. (Thankfully this has now stopped, Ihope)It is even worse for those officers like your latefather that were initially Borough PoliceOfficers, i.e. Macclesfield, Congleton, Hyde,Stockport etc, for their original records werenever transferred across to Cheshire when theamalgamations took place as was the case in 1947when Macclesfield Borough Police became part ofthe Cheshire Constabulary. In the case ofMacclesfield Borough Police documents held by theChester Record Office which have been scrutinisedand copied by this Museum only the following areheld CJP27/3/1 which records officers sworn intothe Macclesfield from 1891 to 1945 and as you knowyour father did not commence his service until1946. The other is the officers Discipline Bookfrom 1921 to 1964 your father does not appear tohave disciplined for any matter as his name doesnot appear in there. We have for many years triedto discover if any further records of anything todo with the officers that served with MacclesfieldBorough were deposited, but all to no avail. Theonly other records that are held for the period1947 to 1967 is the Cheshire Constabulary WeeklyOrders, these are hard back books and I have nodoubt that you father's name will appear in there. These are the only weekly record of what happenedin the force between those dates so you canimagine how valuable they are. Currently we aretrying to get quotes as to the cost to have thesebook scanned in a searchable PDF format, whichwill of course then open up the possibility ofenquirers like yourself finding something out, butof course this does not help your situation at thepresent moment. The only information we hold on your late fatheris that on his entry into the Macclesfield BoroughPolice on the 10th November 1946 he became PC25.He remained at Macclesfield until the amalgamationtook place on the 1st April 1947 and his collarnumber then became 345. As far as we can see heonly ever served within the Macclesfield areauntil his retirement on 29th February 1972. Hereceived his Police Long Service and Good ConductMedal in 1969, and very sadly this all we know. Ifyou have further information and perhaps aphotograph and you wish I could add it hisdatabase record. If you also read the history of the CheshireConstabulary "To the Best of Our Skill andKnowledge" which is on the Museum Web Site, I feelcertain that a useful picture can be obtained oflife in the force at the time, my own opinion isthat discipline was draconian and those whostrayed outside the rule's were fined way abovewhat they earned or dismissed. Also therestrictions on their private life, an officer wasnot allowed to drink on or off duty even in hisown home. It all comes down to the fact that upuntil the 1960's every Chief Constable of Cheshirewas an ex military officer and they of coursebrought with them the military codes of practice. It was basically the same whether you served in aCounty or Borough Force. Further within this bookthere is information on Macclesfield BoroughPolice and there is also a further book giving aShort History of Macclesfield Borough Police. I donot know where you reside but if it is in theMacclesfield area I do know that there is a copyof this book in the Library in Macclesfield andthey will photocopy it for a charge.Again as I said I do not know where you reside butthe Museum is open via appointment every Mondayand Friday and it is based at Warrington, if youwish to visit drop me a mail and I will forward itto the Curator Mr. Peter Wroe, who will thencontact you direct.Lastly there are 11 officers named Hudson thatserved with the Cheshire Constabulary, other thanyour father there is one that jumps out namedJulian Francis Hudson who served from 1926onwards, if he is connected to you please comeback to me.I am truly sorry I could not help you in any greatdetail believe me I would have liked to do so. CanI ask you when you get a moment would you send aquick mail so I can mark of your enquiry ascomplete? If you have any further questions pleasedon't hesitate to contact me. Best wishes JimTalbot. In the second he is in the back row, second from the left (with the downspout stickingout of his helmet!), and in the third, he is inthe back row, third from the left. These two I'msure are taken at George Lane Police Station inBredbury, Stockport.Information from son of Robert Hudson on
